Make It Monday : The Cake is Not a Lie!

Monday, August 5, 2013

Welcome to another Make It Monday! Last week, I did some more baking for my buddies at work. They were "angry" that I brought in more goodies, but were happy to oblige in eating said goodies. Because we're all a bit on the geeky/nerdy side (and especially since every time I bring in a cake, someone always has to say "The Cake is a Lie"), I decided to have fun and make a PORTAL CAKE!

Portal is a pretty awesome game, and if you like puzzle games - this game is right up your alley! In a nutshell, you move through a series of puzzles that must be soled by using the portal gun - which creates a visual and physical connection between two different locations in three-dimensional space.

It's a super fun and hysterical game, albeit very short.

Throughout the game, you hear and see references to a 'cake' at the end of all the levels. "The Cake is a Lie" is also referenced many many times in your environment - presumably by test subjects before yourself.

ANYWAY, on to the cake:

As you can see in the game screenshot above (the first image), there is a crunchy exterior. To achieve that effect, I had some fun and used COCOA PEBBLES (which in hindsight, was a fabulous idea!!!)

The timing of the cake worked out well, because one coworker's birthday was a few days before - and he's a big gamer (and he's the one we made cut the cake for a photo-op!).

The cake was a hit - and was pretty delicious!

Date Day: Air & Space Museum and Star Trek!!

Tuesday, May 21, 2013

This past weekend, Gadget and I went out on a Day-Date. We KNEW we were seeing Star Trek - when and where were the only questions. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we are Trekkies/Trekkers. He got me into Star Trek when we first started dating, and has had me watching it every since. We went and saw the 2009 Star Trek movie together (and then I went with a friend to see it again as my very first IMAX movie).

I knew this movie was going to be epic, and it's definitely one of those movies we were willing to pay a extra couple of dollars to see in IMAX. There is an 3D-IMAX theatre really close to our house, but I wanted this to be my first TRUE IMAX experience - you know, the SUPER GIANT screen?! The only one close to us is at the Air & Space Museum out in Dulles, VA - which isn't too far away (and apparently, it's the biggest projection screen in Virginia?).

We made a day of it - we got to the museum early, grabbed our tickets and walked around until the movie started. After the movie, we went to Boston Market and headed home. (It was my first Boston Market experience too!)

I won't give any spoilers, but it was EPIC... we loved it, and we're definitely going back next weekend to see it in 3D IMAX.

Here are some shots from the day - half of these are from my iPhone, the other half are from Gadget and the Canon.

Anyone seen Star Trek Into Darkness yet? What did you think?

100th Post... and Pi!

Thursday, March 14, 2013

Happy Thursday, and Happy Pi Day!!
I work with a bunch of engineers and one gigantic math nerd - who put together our company's 2nd big Pi Day extravaganza. He asked me to design some badges, and I made some buttons with my button maker for the event. I worked all night on them... so I was very tired today.

But what's Pi Day... without PIE!?! The math nerd from my past is still alive and well, and of course my inner fat kid loves pi day. But not only did we have a ton of pies, a bunch of us ordered pizza for lunch. (lets just say - I need to work out a lot to get rid of the crazy things that went in my belly today) Needless to say, I was in a pie coma on the bus ride home... hahahaa!

Not only is it Pi Day, but it's also my 100th post on SRM, so I'm excited.
