I got a little surprise package in the mail yesterday, and it's so exciting that I couldn't help but share!
I shared a little preview last night on Instagram:

Any guesses on what it might be?!
HINT: Before I showed my coworkers, they asked if it had to do with mermaids... and the answer is YES!

They're so pretty! And the details on some of them are pretty insane. I love them all and I don't know if I could even pick a favorite! Did I mention these were completely free?! I use those codes inside Disney DVDs/Blurays to collect points. Since it's October, and the Little Mermaid Bluray is about to come out, these pins were added to the items you could get. These pins are normally $35 and I wasn't expecting them so soon!!

Since they are a collectors item, I certainly will not be wearing them. I'm thinking of getting a shadowbox to display them in my office and they can go right next to my Muppets collectors stamps.

Have you gotten any fun surprises in the mail recently?

I don't get a chance to share a lot of the design work that I do in any given day (as I have a full-time graphic design job doing things that I can't share), but finally - here's something I CAN SHARE! A few months back, a college friend of mine posted on Facebook that she was looking to revamp her blog's look and design. I jumped at the opportunity!

Felicia is a fantastic artist - she's so colorful and adorable and the original design definitely matched. Her primary focus of her blog was her artwork but she wanted to add a few more topics. And in so doing, she wanted to retain the electric pink and yellow look but wanted to move in a more minimal direction with a hint of whimsy. When she mentioned that she loved argyle, something in my brain clicked and I had an idea for some social media buttons... and a design was born!

I put together a little style guide to show how I was imagining everything working together, and with some input from Felicia, I moved forward!

So here's a little glance of the design as a before and after:

BEFORE

AND AFTER

I can't explain how much different this is, not only from anything else I design on a daily basis (I work for a engineering company... I'm sure you can imagine) but from anything I've really designed, ever. Coding this was insane! I'm proficient in HTML and coding responsive designs, but working the responsive code into Blogger was a bit of a challenge, but I think I nailed it! It translate well to different screen sizes and other devices.

A big Thank You to Felicia for letting me be a part of this blog redesign! You should definitely head over to her blog and check out her artwork - show her some love, and of course see the new design and get a real feel for how it works.

If you're looking for design work, or even a blog redesign of your own, send me an email. I've got a couple of big projects going on right now (that are in their final stages), but I'd love to work with you! The type of people that I gladly hang out with outside of work; one such person is June*. Keep in mind during this whole post that this is not the first prank that we've played on her...

So June went away for a week to Las Vegas and somehow managed to miss her flight. Her coworker Julienne* and their supervisor Flynn* had a long email chain going about how June wasn't going to come back because she ran off and got hitched - she was in Vegas, after all. And she DID send Julienne a photo of a chapel!

Julienne told me of all of this and requested a small banner and a photoshopped image of June and her groom - and ELVIS! We thought June was coming back the following day, so this whole thing started off very small.

We ended up having the full week to continue, and this whole prank quickly turned into sooo much more. It was mostly Julienne and myself, but Flynn definitely had a hand in this too. Before we knew it, there were balloons, streamers, flowers, a Congrats card, gift-wrapped [empty] boxes, Jordan Almond party favors, Champagne, AND A CAKE!!

No joke. It was pretty insane.

And the more we did, the more we were terrified that June was going to be upset - or that people were going to think that she actually got married. She did not!

June returned Friday and it was well received - the cake and champagne definitely helped.

And what do you think of that cake!? That was made by yours truly. I invested in a small cake pan from Michael's and some gold food spray paint. The bottom tier was vanilla and the top was strawberry.

It's been a while since I've shared any artwork (and I want to get back into posting art on here) so I'm going to share with you a tattoo design I just recently finished.

A cousin of mine was diagnosed with stage-two cervical cancer a few years back and passed away last year on my birthday. Since I wasn't very close to her in recent years, I felt that I needed to do something for her. So after her passing, I set up a donation campaign called Teal Team Tara to help raise money that would help benefit her husband and her four children.

Her passing definitely brought my family in NY closer together as my Mom and other cousins all chipped in and did what they could for the husband and the kids on a weekly basis. And with the one year anniversary of her passing quickly approaching, I was asked by the family to design a memorial tattoo.

Tara's favorite flower was the tulip and her favorite color was purple. From there, I started sketching. It needed to have the teal ribbon (though, usually it's shown as a white and teal ribbon). After the first sketch, my Mom asked if I could make it look like the ribbon was the leaves of the flower and to also include her names and the dates.

Here are the stages that this tattoo underwent:

Initially, in my original sketch, I was just doodling and didn't really go off of reference. Once I found the reference I needed, they artwork greatly improved!! Haha!

I did throw in a few little hidden hearts, both in overall shape of the petals, as well as silhouetted by the piece itself - which you can see below:

And once I was finished with shading and the like, I added the name and dates. And then I remembered that the ribbon is usually white & teal, but teal is also used interchangeably. So I did some color correction and a bit of repainting and gave them a teal and white option as well.

My Mom, my Aunt, Tara's two sisters, Tara's oldest daughter and her niece would all be getting this tattoo. I believe they're all going sometime this month or next, so I'll post photos when they're all done!

It's pretty funny, but when I sent this picture to my mother (and the group), I talked to my mother later that day and she told me that she was in tears because she was so happy! Yay!

Also, side-note - apologies for the watermarks, I would just like for these to NOT be stolen.

It all started Friday. I took off from work, initially thinking we were going to leave for the Poconos around noon (but it turned into late evening before we left). Since I had most of the day to do whatever - I took Snow in to my job to meet some people... and get him out of the house. Let's recap that shall we... I took off of work - and still went TO work.

Snow thoroughly enjoyed the short trip to my job - especially being able to sit in the front seat!

Then we finally left for the Poconos - we arrived late Friday night and he proceeded to run around like a mad man - he got to see so many people and places, all in one day!!

But on Saturday, he got to go on a nice long walk and roll around in the grass most of the day. (I do have some pretty hilarious video of this too!)

On Sunday, he was worn out most of the day. He relaxed with me on the porch for a while (and got to enjoy some yogurt), and then went off exploring with Gadget's father.

I've never seen the pup so tired before. When we got home (at 4AM!), he barely made it out of the car. He made a slow b-line for the house and waited for us to open the door and went upstairs, right to bed. He was exhausted! I'm so glad he had such a great time.

Also...
Not Snow related... but how cool is this bird that we saw while we were in Forever 21?! He was just chillin' on this guy's shoulder. His name was Willey.
I joke of course... we did go up to the Poconos to visit some of Gadget's family. Friday was his birthday and Sunday was his sister's birthday, so it was a little family get-together. There were 10 of us - which, for his family, should be categorized as a TEENY TINY family get-together.

His father has a house in the Poconos that I love visiting because the house is gorgeous and is FULL of art from his travels around the world. There is so much natural light in his house, it's pretty spectacular.
We left Friday evening, picked up our nephew and were on our way - it was a 4 hour drive. I was shoved in the backseat with Snow and tried to sleep as much as I could. Everyone else arrived Friday evening and Saturday morning. Once everyone had arrived (and everyone else was awake), we goofed off outside for a bit - well, mostly Gadget. Side note - you see that awesome Deadpool shirt he's wearing, I got him that for his birthday - it's a pretty badass shirt!!

Never a dull moment in this family, Gadget's father decided a great family activity would be to go sky diving (or as my mother-in-law would say, "plane diving"). The airfield was right down the street, and the planes actually pass overhead of the house as they climb and every once in a while you can see a parachute from the porch. It's pretty cool.

There were four of us who did NOT jump. I was perfectly comfortable on the ground, taking pictures and video. They had a blast though! I did get to really get a lot of use out of my 10x zoom lens on my iphone, which was really cool - it's really the only reason I was able to get some of the shots that I did. The picture of the plane below... that's WITH the 10x zoom lens. That plane was really high, and you could barely see when people jumped out - they were as small as a pinhead in the sky. It was pretty crazy.
Don't they look like astronauts!? I'm so unbelievably proud of Gadget - next time, maybe I'll join in... Good morning, it's Monday - which means it's time for another Make It Monday!!
I'm on a roll - 3 of them in a row!

In a never-ending attempt to organize my office, my massive desk has been at the very heart of every re-organization that my office has gone through. It's technically two IKEA Linnmon table tops put together to make one giant kaiju of a desk (yes, I said kaiju - ie. giant monster - and yes, I saw Pacific Rim). Put together like this, the desk measures 78" x 48"...ish. (78¾" x 47¼")

When we moved >cough< last March >cough<, the desks did not make it to the new apartment in one piece. Someone's foot when through the top of one of the desks, and said person decided to try to hide it. There were also a ton of other scuffs and scratches in the same table top - the other table made it safely. After settling in, I filled the gap with expanding foam and painted the top black.

Unfortunately, it was VERY noticeable. Both from the uneven-ness of the top as well as the paint. I tried covering the whole thing with contact paper, but that didn't work out well - both because of the material and the seams. But I knew I wanted to cover the desk with something...

So when I saw Erin from How to Nest for Less cover her craft table with laminate flooring, a light bulb went off in my head. I didn't want anything dark though. My office doesn't get a whole lot of natural light, and that giant black desk sucks all the light out of the room as it is...

I went to Home Depot, looked around a bit, priced out some stuff... and waited. My cheapest option was going to be $30, and we've had other things going on, so it was going to have to wait longer.

Until, one day while grocery shopping at Aldi, I passed by the clearance rack and saw a couple of boxes of laminate tile. Most were dark... and then there was this beauty!

Take a look at that price! Yes, that says 75 CENTS - now THAT is in my price range! Haha

I did a quick count to make sure all of the tiles were in there, and this bad boy came home with me... and then proceeded to sit in the trunk of my car for over a month. Until last weekend, when I decided to get my butt in gear and get moving on the revamp!

I did have to cut down the tiles to fit, and I wanted to make sure there was still a seam where the two desks meet, so when they have to come apart, it doesn't destroy the tiles. But that wasn't so bad.

sorry it's so dark - the sun went away by the time I finished.

Once I was done, I set my computer up (that I haven't touched in forever)! Now, everytime I walk in my office I smile! It looks wonderful!!

This was just part 1 in my office revamp, and this past weekend, I worked hours on organizing and cleaning. So more pictures will come as I progress!

Thanks for visiting! Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00512934435838673493noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6949295726881870585.post-52272388491102967952013-08-05T11:55:00.000-04:002013-08-09T06:54:33.943-04:00Make It Monday : The Cake is Not a Lie!
Welcome to another Make It Monday! Last week, I did some more baking for my buddies at work. They were "angry" that I brought in more goodies, but were happy to oblige in eating said goodies. Because we're all a bit on the geeky/nerdy side (and especially since every time I bring in a cake, someone always has to say "The Cake is a Lie"), I decided to have fun and make a PORTAL CAKE!

Portal is a pretty awesome game, and if you like puzzle games - this game is right up your alley! In a nutshell, you move through a series of puzzles that must be soled by using the portal gun - which creates a visual and physical connection between two different locations in three-dimensional space.

It's a super fun and hysterical game, albeit very short.

Throughout the game, you hear and see references to a 'cake' at the end of all the levels. "The Cake is a Lie" is also referenced many many times in your environment - presumably by test subjects before yourself.

As you can see in the game screenshot above (the first image), there is a crunchy exterior. To achieve that effect, I had some fun and used COCOA PEBBLES (which in hindsight, was a fabulous idea!!!)

The timing of the cake worked out well, because one coworker's birthday was a few days before - and he's a big gamer (and he's the one we made cut the cake for a photo-op!).

The cake was a hit - and was pretty delicious!

It's been a little over a month since my mother told me she needed my thrifty/crafty talents. I was given a task : find a pair of shoes that were gold and covered in gold glitter. Trying to find out what type of shoe she wanted was like pulling teeth, and I kept finding loads of sparkly shoes on my various trips to the 2 big thrift stores by me...

...but they were either a) the wrong color, b) not the right size, or c) had a super high and skinny heel.

Then I found these pale tan babies. I sent off a photo to my mom and told her that I could paint them and cover them in glitter. For $5 - it was about to go down!

I started by covering the heals in painters tape and filling the inside with newspaper. I pulled out my trusty gold spray paint (that I used here on a tiki jar and a stegosaurus).

They dried overnight and the following evening, I started putting glue on the shoes and covering them with glitter. I only did one shoe at first cause I wasn't sure how the glitter was going to hold up - and it was late in the evening, which is why the lighting is pretty terrible in some of these (apologies!)

We weren't really concerned with how well they were going to hold out - they were for a fundraiser dance and that would be the last time she ever wore them. I still didn't want glitter to go EVERYWHERE, so I clear coated them before packing them in a shoe box (that took up half of my suitcase).

We landed in New York and got out to my Mom's... and I was impressed with how well they held up to being tossed around.

These were a huge success and I look forward to painting more shoes in the future!!

I've been with the company I work with for 3 and a half years - and other than a few days here and there around the holidays, I've never taken a vacation. I've always been beaten to the punch at snagging a certain week off (which is how I missed my Mother's wedding last year). This year, when the family in New York picked a week for the annual family cookout, we grabbed plane tickets ASAP (ie. back in February). Gadget wasn't sure if he was going to be able to get off work, so I went on my own.

It was a crazy, busy busy week. I don't think I've ever done so much when I've gone away... ever!

I drove up to my Aunt's on Friday afternoon and flew out to NY Saturday morning. It was still another hour (PLUS... stupid traffic) out to my mom's house... and Saturday night was the Nana Cares' Disco Dance Fundraiser. Sunday was the family cookout; we spent the whole day Monday & Wednesday at a cousin's pool; Tuesday was spent 20 miles offshore, fishing on a boat; Thursday, I flew back to MD. I stayed at my Aunt's house Thursday night, Gadget (& SNOW!) met up with me and we went off to Grandma's Friday morning. I had a friend who was having a birthday over on Assateague Island - which is only an hour from my Grandma's - so we were going to meet them there. Well, at the last minute, Gadget changed his mind, and we went home. >sad face<

I spent all day yesterday relaxing, watching Ink Master, Tattoo Nightmares, Teen Wolf, and Tanked. I also went grocery shopping... but that's never very exciting.

Overall, it was a pretty awesome vacation - and I'll wear my crazy sunburn with pride! I got out of the house and did stuff - I went swimming, caught some fish and had a great time with my family. I'll be sharing some more photos as the week goes on of the different fun things that happened during my vacation!

Mr. Snow is officially a big boy! We got Snow on my husband's birthday and knowing Snow was about 10 weeks when we got him, that puts his birthday in the middle of June. We (and by we I really only mean myself) decided that we were going to celebrate! It's been a week long celebration, really.
Snow got to go on a ton of car rides this week, including several trips to the dog park; he got to go to PetSmart, meet a lot of new people and pups, and pick out a toy; and last but not least, he got a small birthday bash on Sunday!
We didn't invite any other dogs over - it was only Snow, Gadget and myself. I put a birthday ribbon and a hat, and started snapping some photos. I was really surprised that he didn't fight to get the hat off. I put together a birthday "cake" - which was two biscuits with peanut butter in the middle and cream cheese icing on top - and of course, a candle!

I bought Snow a kiddie-pool and put a bunch of water balloons in it. It was a bit rainy on Sunday... so it wasn't really hot enough for Snow to get the full effect of the pool. But it's definitely nice to have one at home, since he really loves the one at the dog park.
I can't believe June is almost over already. I wanted to make sure I'm on course with meeting my 2013 New Years Resolutions this year... so here's an update on how that's going.

For those who follow me on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram, you may have already heard - but I got my drivers license and a 'new' car!

I've had my license before, but it expired years ago - and being in college, I didn't need it... so unfortunately, I had to take my permit test and drivers test all over again. I did this first thing last Saturday... then we went off to Grandma and Grandpa's to get my car!!

I've been driving to and from work for 4 days now - and it is A.MAZ.ING! Monday, I was able to lolly-gag at work for a bit, leave, make 2 pit-stops on the way home, take care of all the animals once I got home, change my clothes, walk Snow, go to the dog park for 45 minutes and go back home... all in the same amount of time it use to take me to get home on the buses. >sigh of relief<

I am already addicted to my new independence - and after one trip to the dog park, Snow now assumes that every time we go outside, we're going for a ride. Silly puppy.

Good afternoon everyone! I wanted to show you guys a little preview of things I've been working on recently - it's mostly design work, but I know I need to start drawing more, so hopefully I'll start posting some illustration work here soon.
From top to bottom, you'll see 1) a painting of a Weedy Sea Dragon Mermaid, 2) a logo for a coworker's tech blog, 3) a laundry label for a friend, 4) a Save the Date postcard, 5) a logo for a friend's blog revamp (which is almost ready to be shared!!), and 6) a logo for a non-profit.

This isn't everything that I've been working on in the last few weeks - but I have some big things to share soon, so I hope you stay tuned!
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00512934435838673493noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6949295726881870585.post-19390242051013449832013-06-04T20:52:00.001-04:002013-06-05T07:37:09.281-04:00Sevenly : One Week. One Cause.

I adore Sevenly and everything that they do!

What is Sevenly? Sevenly is a weekly cause activation platform. Some have even called them a cause crowdfunding platform. Every week, they partner with a new non-profit organization, create unique art and limited edition products that they then sell exclusively on their website for 7 days. For every product sold, they give that week’s non-profit organization $7. For example, if they sold 1,000 products, Sevenly would donate $7,000 to that week's charity.

This week's charity hit home - hard. And I cried before even watching their video. (You'll understand if you read the following few paragraphs) This week, they've partnered with 4 Paws For Ability - who enriches the lives of children with disabilities by training and placing quality, task-trained service dogs. This provides increased independence for the children, and assistance to their families. And 4 Paws also works with veterans from recent conflicts who’ve lost the use of their limbs or their hearing while in active combat. In all cases, the results speak for themselves.

I haven't talked about it much on the blog, cause it wasn't ever pertinent - but I have epilepsy. Not severe epilepsy, but epilepsy with no discernible cause or cure (or even medication that helps). I've undergone testing off and on my whole life, and the doctor's have never been able to tell what the cause is. I'm fortune though - I don't have them frequently, and I'm part of the 1% of epilepsy sufferers that is able to tell that one is about to happen. For this reason, I've never needed a service dog - and with all the animals that we've had over the years, we've never had an animal that even seemed to notice something was happening.

Enter Snow. Snow was not trained to be a service dog - he's far too energetic for one. Like most animals that are close with their people, he's very in-tune to our emotions and knows when something is bothering us. A few months back, I started to have a seizure and got to the floor before I could fall. Snow KNEW something was up - whether he could hear or smell it, he knew something wasn't right. He came over to me and calmly laid on top of me. That's not like him at all - normally, if you lay on the floor - he's going to be licking the crap out of your face. It was an eye-opening moment, and I fell in love with him even more that day. I had the seizure, and when I came to, he was laying on me, just watching me.

Remembering that moment is what caused me to cry when I saw their cause this week. Like I mentioned, my seizures aren't that frequent - not like some children out there who have 50 seizures a day - 99% of who have no idea it's about to happen! I can't imagine the terror of that. I'm fortunate to have the ability to sense them coming, and to have Snow who is apparently tuned in to it. This is where I beg you, please buy a t-shirt this week.

Help a child. Help a family. It's worth it.

I'd like to mention that I was in no way contacted to write about Sevenly and their cause of this week. I was not given any money or product in return for this post. All comments above are true and shared because I care about this cause.

I can't believe May is almost over! It's a little late this month, but I wanted to share a little taste of what has caught my eye over the course of the month.

I did not intentionally make this month's wishlist all blue... but perhaps that was a subconscious extension of my overhaul melancholy mood from this month?

But honestly, how great are some of these pieces? I want to venture into more patterned tights, I want more open shoes (even though I have a thing with my feet), and I just REALLY love that clock and that mug!

Howdy everyone! I started sharing this the other day, but Gadget and I were talking about it and more changes were made - but I'm going to share with you guys what's been developing with the design of my new blog layout.

Off the jump, you'll notice a huge difference between these two and the two that I shared a few months back.

There's a lot going on right now, but you'll notice that this is a HUGE redesign - from the ground up! So far, I'm super pleased with how posts will look - but that sidebar/header is making me really indecisive. There's a lot of duplication of buttons because I was testing how hover & active states will look.

With this first one, I had the big header at the top... which I'm going to be moving away from.... and I know I want to show off some artwork, but I don't want to take away from the blog content, so I'm going to go with a faded lineart.

With the second one, I put the header title IN the sidebar, and pushed the main content to the top of the browser.

This third one I feel is moving more towards the right direction. I removed all the extraneous hover state buttons to eliminate confusion (for both you and myself, haha!) I adjusted how the photo & about me info is displayed so it doesn't clash with the lineart in the background. Speaking of background lineart - I'm going to make it bigger like in the 2nd version above.

My ONLY gripe right now is that I didn't make the content wider - in fact, I somehow went narrower...
But I am pleased with how this is going thus far!! I'm trying to solidify a design by Memorial Day (Monday!!) and get started on some code!

This past weekend, Gadget and I went out on a Day-Date. We KNEW we were seeing Star Trek - when and where were the only questions. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we are Trekkies/Trekkers. He got me into Star Trek when we first started dating, and has had me watching it every since. We went and saw the 2009 Star Trek movie together (and then I went with a friend to see it again as my very first IMAX movie).

I knew this movie was going to be epic, and it's definitely one of those movies we were willing to pay a extra couple of dollars to see in IMAX. There is an 3D-IMAX theatre really close to our house, but I wanted this to be my first TRUE IMAX experience - you know, the SUPER GIANT screen?! The only one close to us is at the Air & Space Museum out in Dulles, VA - which isn't too far away (and apparently, it's the biggest projection screen in Virginia?).

We made a day of it - we got to the museum early, grabbed our tickets and walked around until the movie started. After the movie, we went to Boston Market and headed home. (It was my first Boston Market experience too!)

I won't give any spoilers, but it was EPIC... we loved it, and we're definitely going back next weekend to see it in 3D IMAX.

Here are some shots from the day - half of these are from my iPhone, the other half are from Gadget and the Canon.

I've been working on getting some artwork and design work together for presentation purposes and my portfolio site is taking longer than planned. I've just had so much on my plate - I'm slowly clipping away at the ever-growing to-do-list.

In the meantime, I posted my artwork on a brand-new portfolio sharing site called Dunked:

Click here to visit my portfolio on Dunked!

It just came out of beta and opened to the public on May 1st. I'm thoroughly impressed with what the small team behind Dunked has done.
It's a completely free way of creating an online portfolio without knowing any code. For now there is only one template (that you can customize heavily with CSS) that is completely responsive AND retina-ready! Even if you don't know code, you can take control of fonts, colors and more with their admin interface. It's also super easy to add projects, edit images and move things around with drag & drop capabilities.

I am loving Dunked and highly recommended it to anyone looking for a simple, clean and FREE way of displaying their work online!

Has anyone else tried using Dunked? I'd love to see some new portfolios!

I've been in a bit of a funk recently - mostly because of financial reasons... so what better way to bring a smile to my face than to search tumblr & the interwebs for animal gifs?! I'm going to share some of my favorites that I've been collecting. I definitely was giggling out of control with a couple of these!

It seems like the year has just been sailing by so fast, but I gotta be honest - April was the longest month ever. We started out with Snow's injury and my awful allergies, then went through some crazy medical issues on top of my own injury... and now I'm getting over strep throat. I'm so glad that May is here and we can move past this craziness.

I have big plans for May!

This past weekend was full of excitement! It's a shame I'm still "gimpy" because of my back, but I don't remember the last time I've had so much going on in such a short period of time!

I went to the Chiropractor again on Friday, and then right after work, I was invited to Putt Putt with a couple of coworkers. I've never played putt putt in my life, and I surprisingly wasn't terrible - I even got a hole in one! It was a load of fun, and we all definitely want to do that again. After putt putt, we went into Arlington, and went to a bar/club... it was more for singles to mingle, so I didn't stick around long. Besides, my back was killing me and it was getting super super late.

Saturday, I went out galavanting - picked up some stuff for work, some new dresses, and random groceries. As my back was still in quite a bit of pain, I relaxed for the rest of the afternoon... in preparation for Sunday!

On Sunday, I got to see some High School friends that I haven't seen in 8-ish years! They've lived relatively close to me for the past 3 years, and our schedules just never worked out to hang out. One is about to move, so they had a Pie Potluck (a Pieluck?). I had a blast, and it was so great to see them again!
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00512934435838673493noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6949295726881870585.post-6612510578394225832013-04-26T16:46:00.001-04:002013-04-26T16:46:56.279-04:00Last Weeks Thrifty Thursday
I've basically been down for the count this week. I was working in my office on Sunday and suddenly my back went into a painful spasm and I've been suffering since. I did go to the Chiropractor twice this week and I'm healing a bit - but apparently, I'm all out of whack and have a long way to go.

Last Thursday, I realized that I hadn't been to the big thrift store in a while, so I decided to go on a whim. I tell you what, I've never been so giddy leaving a thrift store before.

My shopping methods are odd. Thrift store or not - I pick up items, walk around with them for a while and more things are picked up, some put down... I have a similar method even in online shopping! I had the wine rack from below in my hands at one point, some lace and some fabric - but none of it came home with me.

Here's a bunch of fun stuff that I did find that day:

1 // A Bull Terrier statue. Unfortunately his ear was broken. I love Bull Terriers and I love that his patch is on the same side as Snow's.
2 // An interesting dragon teapot.
3 // A polka dot teapot - how cute is this?!
4 // Some saddles?! That's really out of place for this area...

5 // Wine rack. I almost left with this. I immediately thought of the wine rack marker organizer from My Case Studies - I thought of bringing it home, painting it white and using it as an organizer myself.
6 // When I saw the faint image from this rolled up wall scroll, I knew immediately what the subject was. I opened it up and saw a wonderful Sailor Moon Wall Scroll. It ended up costing me $1.40. This was the best find ever! The scroll won't work well in the wall gallery I'm doing in my office, but I'm going to make my own frame (since it's cheaper!)

That's all for today. With my back in its current state, this may be the last thrift store trip for a while. >sad face<
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00512934435838673493noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6949295726881870585.post-8754947424604179022013-04-14T23:30:00.000-04:002013-04-15T14:38:03.851-04:00Sunday Sumup #11
I skipped last week's sumup, and almost skipped this week's too. But in a nutshell, honestly, this week was pretty much nothing but me complaining about the heat. It's been awful hot, but this weekend has been wonderful - high 60s, low 70s with some nice breezes.

So, Mr Snow is healing nicely. I was trying to take some photos of him to show my Mom how good he's healing and I got a bunch of derpy photos. On Friday, we saw Snow's brother (who is all white and is muuuuch smaller, but heftier), and on Saturday we met a new 4 month old blue pit puppy in the neighborhood. His name is Zuko and him and Snow were having a blast... and then little Zuko's paws slapped Snow in the eye and his cut opened back up. >sigh< Boys!

The best part of this week was definitely this weekend. My grandparents came to visit! This is the first time they've seen our current place - and the first time they've come to visit since... 2009? They also brought my kitty home (she's been at their house since Easter)! She got fixed, so she's got a shaved belly that I keep poking. She doesn't seem to mind it, and she's following me around everywhere (more so than usual); I guess she's afraid I'm going to leave her again.

They don't have a GPS, so giving them directions was... interesting. It's really NOT that hard from their house to ours. It's 2 hours... but it's almost a straight shot with only a couple of major exits/turns. We told them when they took the exit for our main 'highway', go 5 miles and then turn on a certain road. They called us, saying they were lost and were sure they missed the turn... they hadn't even gone 1 mile. >shakes my head< On their way home, it was supposed to be even easier! Go up the highway, take the FIRST GIANT GREEN HIGHWAY EXIT SIGN and stay to the right. ...somehow... SOMEHOW... they missed it. They made it home safely, it's just... I have no words except for that I love them. So much. They're so special.

It was a great weekend though, and I really wish they could have stayed longer and/or come more often.

Have a great week everyone!
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00512934435838673493noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6949295726881870585.post-26703763758284601822013-04-12T07:56:00.000-04:002013-04-12T07:56:41.612-04:00Thinking about Bikes
It has been between 85° and 93° this week. Its been awful waiting outside for buses - and even worse the bus is an hour late AND the heat is on full blast. I greatly dislike the hot weather. Getting a car for myself was my top resolution for this year, but sadly it's just not financially doable right now. I thought about getting a scooter - and I've been tossing around the idea of getting a bicycle.

I live only 12 miles from work, but it takes hours to get home on public transit - in a car, it's only 20 minutes. It's a huge waste of time and I'm unable to do anything during the commute. I can't read, draw, play games, nothing! I get terrible motion sickness on the bus. That time adds up and I can't help but think of all the work I could get done in a week with that time.

So I've started doing some research into different types of bikes and have been weighing my options. Not only would it be super beneficially in shortening my commute, but it's great exercise (of which I definitely need to do more of). It'll also be great for the short trips I make during the weekends to go shopping - I won't have to wait on and pay for a stupid bus that's probably super late - and it would be soo much faster!!

I've collected a bunch of imagery of different bike styles and types that I've been looking at. I'm trying to keep the price low too - cause there are so many other things that I need to get to go along with it such as a lock, a basket, a helmet, etc. I also was looking at some crazy bikes (G-J) just for fun - those are more for carting groceries (and Snow?)

This is all still up in the air, and there are still so many things I would need to iron out in my commuting - Gadget takes me to work, so how would the bike come with me? There is NO way a bike would ever fit in our car... and he refuses to put a bike rack on the back. My thought? A folding bike! The one I'm looking into is surprisingly a LOT cheaper than I expected.

And something else i thought about - the ability to possibly bike with Snow! That would take a lot of work in training him, but would be pretty awesome. I also love the idea of a doggy trailer or sidecar - how funny is that?!
